What types of emergencies should a PSO be prepared to handle?

A Protective Security Officer (PSO) should be prepared to handle emergencies such as natural disasters and medical emergencies because these situations can pose significant risks to public safety and need immediate attention. Natural disasters, including floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes, often require specific responses to ensure the safety of individuals in affected areas. Additionally, medical emergencies – like heart attacks, severe injuries, or other health crises – demand prompt action and often necessitate the coordination of medical services, crowd management, and communication with emergency responders.

Being trained to handle these types of emergencies allows PSOs to effectively safeguard personnel and the public, mitigate potential harm, and assist first responders. While political protests, crowd celebrations, and private events may also involve safety considerations, they are not classified as emergencies in the same way that natural disasters and medical situations are, which pose immediate threats to health and safety.
